The Hidden Treasures of Mayfair: Mount Street Gardens

Hidden in the backstreets of northern Mayfair, just off Mount Street and a stone's throw away from the American Embassy, there is an oasis of tropical tranquility right in the heart of London: Mount Street Gardens.

I didn't discover it myself. I was introduced to it by a dear work colleague during one of those moments when only a change of scenery could bring about temporary relief from the burdens of a soulless existence in a mind - numbing job; and it has since become one of my favourite lunchtime retreats. It's a hidden gem and far superior to the nearby Berkeley Square Gardens, which frankly resemble a sandpit surrounded by busy streets and high rise office buildings.

Mount Street Gardens, by comparison, is a tropical oasis of peace, featuring palm trees, a selection of resident birds and in its centre you will find an eye - catching bronze of a horse's head by sculptor Nic Fiddian-Green.

The garden's footpaths are lined with benches, most of which have been gifted by Americans with links to the nearby American embassy, as a token of their appreciation for the gardens whilst based in London.

As a result of its sheltered location, the gardens feature a variety of trees and shrubs, including palm trees, and provide habitat for a number of resident bird species including Magpies, Great Tits, Robins and, of course, City Pigeons, who can from time to time be observed taking full advantage of the sprinklers, especially in warm weather.

All in all, Mount Street Gardens is one of the most enchanting locations Mayfair has on offer.
