Free Knitting Pattern: Irish Moss Diamond Dishcloth
I was looking for a small knitting project to use up less than half a skein of Stylecraft Kon-Tiki cotton yarn. On this occasion, I finally decided to pursue the dishcloth option.
I have never knitted a dishcloth before, thinking that knitted dishcloths are somewhat of a waste of precious yarn, but as this particular skein, which has previously been utilised for many weekly knit swatches, looked already pretty tired and dishevelled from frequent use, the yarn finally needed to be turned into a permanent project.
Framed by a garter stitch border to keep the fabric flat, the Irish Moss Diamond motifs are worked against a background of stockinette stitch. The diamond stitch motif is created through the variation of knit and purl stitches, making this pattern suitable for knitters of all skill levels.
As gauge is not important for this project and final measurements will vary depending on the choice of yarn and needle size, my measurements provide an estimate only.
Including the garter stitch borders and after working two pattern repeats on size 4mm needles, my dishcloth measures 12cm x 18cm in total and required approximately 17g of Stylecraft Kon-Tiki (50% acrylic, 50% cotton yarn).
Materials, Tools and Measurements
- For a dishcloth measuring approximately 12cm by 18cm you will require just under 20g of Stylecraft Kon-Tiki (50% cotton / 50% acrylic) yarn or any yarn of a similar composition (Kon-Tiki is discontinued, but the project is suitable for cotton yarns with similar attributes)
- 4mm straight knitting needles
- fine darning needle (for sewing in yarn ends)
- crochet hook for creating a small chain stitch loop at the end of the bind-off (optional)
- blocking utensils (optional)

Bind-Off
Before binding-off, work 4 rows in garter stitch (knit all rows).
Continue to bind-off all stitches.
To create a loop for the dishcloth, bind off all stitches apart from the last stitch. Continue to work a crochet chain into the last remaining live stitch. When the crochet chain has reached the desired length, bind-off the crochet chain and attach the chain to the dishcloth to create a loop.
Weave in yarn ends, block (totally optional) and enjoy the washing up.
