The Weekly Swatch: Horizontal Mock Smock Knit Stitch

The Horizontal Mock Smock Knit Stitch creates an openwork net fabric that is richly textured thanks to the horizontally slanted mock smock effect, which is achieved by working stitch clusters through the back loops of three live stitches.

This stitch is worked over four rows and all wrong side rows require only purling. As the mock smock clusters require knitting multiple times through the back loops of three live stitches before these are dropped off the left-hand needle, the preceding purl rows should be worked very loosely. To ensure that the clusters can be worked with ease, it may also be beneficial to work the even rows with a slightly smaller needle.
